Attribute
Attribute
Also known as: ability score, stat, characteristic
Definition
A core stat representing broad innate capability like Strength, Intelligence, or Charisma. Attributes combine with skills or other factors to determine your effectiveness at tasks.
How it works in different systems
D&D 5e: Six abilities (STR, DEX, CON, INT, WIS, CHA) rated 1-20+. Modifier = (score-10)/2.
Vampire V5: Nine attributes in Physical/Social/Mental categories, rated 1-5 dots.
Call of Cthulhu 7e: Eight characteristics (STR, CON, SIZ, DEX, APP, INT, POW, EDU) rated 15-90.
Powered by the Apocalypse: Varies by game but typically 5-6 stats rated -1 to +3.
Example
“With Strength 16 (+3 modifier) in D&D 5e, you add +3 to attack rolls and damage with melee weapons, plus Strength-based skill checks like Athletics.”
Common Mistakes
- Confusing attributes with skills (attributes are innate; skills are learned)
- In D&D, confusing the attribute score (e.g., 16) with the modifier (e.g., +3)
- Dumping an attribute to minimum without considering roleplay consequences
