Firearms (Call of Cthulhu 7th Edition)

Skills

Definition

Firearms is a specialization skill covering ranged weapons beyond handguns. Specialties include Rifle/Shotgun, Submachine Gun, Machine Gun, and Heavy Weapons. Each represents proficiency with a category of firearms. In Call of Cthulhu's 1920s setting, rifles and shotguns are common—hunting is widespread, and the Great War left many veterans familiar with military weapons. Shotguns are devastatingly effective at close range, while rifles excel at distance. Military-grade weapons like machine guns and submachine guns are harder to acquire but far more destructive. Against some Mythos threats, concentrated firepower may be your only option.

How it works

**Base Value**: Varies by specialty—Rifle/Shotgun 25%, Submachine Gun 15%, Machine Gun 10%, Heavy Weapons 10% **Key Uses**: - Engaging targets at various ranges - Providing covering fire - Hunting and marksmanship - Defending positions **Special Rules**: Rifles have long range but slow rate of fire. Shotguns devastate at close range with spread. Automatic weapons can spray areas but burn ammunition. Range penalties apply beyond effective distance.

Tips

**Build Advice**: Firearms (Rifle/Shotgun) is the most broadly useful specialty. Shotguns are devastating in close quarters, rifles dominate at range. **Occupation Synergies**: Pairs with Spot Hidden for target acquisition, Stealth for sniper ambushes, and Navigate for finding good firing positions. **Character Concepts**: WWI veteran, big game hunter, police officer, gangster, rural farmer.

Frequently asked questions

Rifle or shotgun—which is better?

Both fall under the same skill. Shotguns deal massive damage at close range (multiple projectiles) but lose effectiveness at distance. Rifles deal solid damage at any range. Choose based on expected engagement distance.

How do automatic weapons work?

Automatic fire allows multiple attacks per round but at reduced accuracy. The shooter can spray a burst at one target or across an area. Ammunition depletes rapidly—a full magazine can empty in seconds.
