Occult (Call of Cthulhu 7th Edition)

Skills

Definition

Occult represents knowledge of the supernatural as understood by human occult traditions—magic, witchcraft, mysticism, and secret societies. Importantly, this is NOT the same as Cthulhu Mythos knowledge. Occult covers human understanding of the supernatural: tarot, astrology, Hermetic magic, folk beliefs, and similar traditions. While often inaccurate about the true nature of the Mythos, Occult knowledge can provide valuable context and recognize when something supernatural is afoot.

How it works

**Base Value**: 5% **Common Rolls**: - Recognizing occult symbols and practices - Understanding cult rituals - Identifying magical traditions - Reading occult texts (non-Mythos) **vs Cthulhu Mythos**: Occult covers human supernatural traditions. Cthulhu Mythos covers true cosmic knowledge. **Danger**: High Occult doesn't protect Sanity—it just means you know what you're dealing with.

Tips

**Contextual Knowledge**: Occult helps you understand cults and rituals even when the Mythos is involved. **Spell Research**: Some spells require Occult knowledge to learn or cast. **Recognize the Signs**: Occult practitioners might recognize something is wrong even if they don't know exactly what.
