Ride (Call of Cthulhu 7th Edition)
Definition
Ride represents your ability to ride horses and other mounts—staying in the saddle during difficult maneuvers, controlling the animal in stressful situations, and performing mounted activities like shooting or jumping obstacles. In Call of Cthulhu's 1920s setting, horses are still common in rural areas, on ranches, and in police and military units, even as automobiles become dominant. In period-appropriate and globe-trotting campaigns, horses (or camels, mules, or more exotic mounts) may be the only transportation available in remote regions. Ride also covers basic animal handling for mounts—calming a spooked horse, directing it through obstacles, and caring for it.

Frequently asked questions
Is Ride useful in a city-based campaign?
Rarely. In urban 1920s settings, automobiles dominate. Ride becomes relevant in rural areas, period settings, or when investigations lead to locations where vehicles can't go.
Can I fight from horseback?
Yes, but it's difficult. Melee attacks from horseback may require both Ride and Fighting rolls. Shooting from horseback imposes penalties on Firearms. The horse adds speed and height advantages.
