Throw (Call of Cthulhu 7th Edition)

Skills

Definition

Throw represents your ability to accurately hurl objects at targets—throwing knives, rocks, grenades, dynamite, bottles, and anything else that can be launched by hand. In Call of Cthulhu, Throw is the skill for all ranged attacks that don't use a firearm or bow. While it might seem like a minor skill, Throw has critical applications in Mythos investigations. Throwing dynamite into a nest of creatures, hurling a vial of acid at a horror, tossing a grappling hook onto a ledge, or lobbing a Molotov cocktail into a cult meeting—Throw covers all of these. In the 1920s, grenades and dynamite are relatively accessible, making Throw a surprisingly potent combat option.

How it works

**Base Value**: 20% **Key Uses**: - Throwing grenades and dynamite - Hurling improvised weapons - Throwing knives and axes - Tossing objects accurately (grappling hooks, ropes) **Special Rules**: Range is limited by STR and object weight. Grenades and dynamite use Throw for placement, with separate rules for blast radius. Throwing knives deal less damage than firearms but are silent. Damage depends on the object thrown.

Tips

**Build Advice**: Moderate investment is worthwhile for any investigator who might use explosives or improvised weapons. The dynamite option alone makes it valuable. **Occupation Synergies**: Pairs with any combat skill for tactical flexibility, Mechanical Repair for creating improvised throwable devices, and Stealth for surprise attacks. **Character Concepts**: Baseball player, soldier, demolitions expert, circus performer, cricket player, hunter.

Frequently asked questions

How far can I throw?

Range depends on STR and object weight. A grenade can be thrown about STR/5 yards. Heavier objects have shorter range. The Keeper adjudicates based on the specific situation and object.

Is Throw useful in combat?

Very useful with the right ammunition. Dynamite and grenades are devastating. Even rocks and bottles can distract or injure. Throw provides ranged combat options when firearms aren't available or appropriate.
