Attack Roll
Attack Roll
Definition
A roll made to determine if an attack hits its target. Compare the result to the target's AC or defense - meeting or exceeding it means you hit and can roll damage.
Example
“Attacking the goblin (AC 15): you roll 1d20+5 and get 17. 17 ≥ 15, so you hit! Now roll damage.”
Common Mistakes
- Rolling damage before confirming you hit
- Adding the wrong modifier (STR for melee, DEX for ranged/finesse, spellcasting mod for spell attacks)
- Forgetting advantage or disadvantage
