Fast talk (Call of Cthulhu 7th Edition)
Definition
Fast Talk represents your ability to deceive, confuse, and verbally manipulate others in the moment. It's the con artist's skill—bluffing past a guard, spinning a quick lie, creating a distraction, or pressuring someone into a snap decision before they think it through. Unlike Persuade (which builds genuine agreement over time) or Charm (which creates likability), Fast Talk works through speed, confusion, and misdirection. The effects are temporary—once the target has time to think, they may realize they've been duped. In Call of Cthulhu's 1920s setting, Fast Talk gets you past the immediate obstacle but can create problems later if the deception is discovered.

Frequently asked questions
What happens when Fast Talk wears off?
The target realizes they were manipulated and becomes hostile or suspicious. They may alert others, refuse further cooperation, or seek revenge. Use Fast Talk when you need results now and can deal with consequences later.
Can I Fast Talk in combat?
The Keeper decides, but brief verbal misdirection is possible—'Look out behind you!' However, it's situational and opponents in combat are highly alert.
