Manipulation (Mage: The Ascension 20th Anniversary)

Attributes

Definition

Manipulation measures a mage's ability to influence others through cunning, persuasion, and deception. Where Charisma attracts through genuine appeal, Manipulation achieves goals through whatever argument or approach works best, whether truthful or not. For Awakened characters, Manipulation reflects the same force of will that reshapes reality, turned toward reshaping social situations. The Ascension War is fought as much through influence as through magick. Manipulative mages infiltrate Technocracy front companies, turn enemy agents, extract information from unwilling sources, and navigate the treacherous politics of Tradition councils. In a world where Paradox punishes overt magick, sometimes the most effective tool is a well-placed word.

How it works

**Key Uses**: - Persuasion and negotiation - Deception and lying convincingly - Seduction and emotional manipulation - Extracting information from unwilling sources **Special Rules**: Manipulation + Subterfuge for lying. Manipulation + Persuasion for negotiation. Manipulation + Intimidation for threats. If a Manipulation attempt is detected, it often backfires, as people resent being manipulated. Failed Manipulation rolls can turn allies into enemies.

Tips

**Build Advice**: Critical for socially active mages and infiltrators. Extremely useful for mages who need to operate among Sleepers without resorting to Mind magick. Less important for hermits and pure researchers. **Tradition Synergies**: Order of Hermes use Manipulation in their endless political intrigues. Virtual Adepts employ social engineering alongside digital hacking. Euthanatos manipulate targets into positions where the Good Death can be administered. **Character Concepts**: Hermetic political schemer, Virtual Adept social engineer, Euthanatos judge who maneuvers the guilty into exposure, Syndicate defector running long cons.

Frequently asked questions

Is Manipulation evil or underhanded?

Not inherently. Manipulation covers all forms of directed influence, including honest negotiation and tactical arguments. A mage using Manipulation + Persuasion to talk down a suicidal Sleeper is being Manipulative in the game-mechanical sense without being villainous.

Why use Manipulation when Mind magick exists?

Mind magick is vulgar when it alters thoughts, generating Paradox and potentially alerting other Awakened beings. Mundane Manipulation is Paradox-free, undetectable by magical means, and often more sustainable. Smart mages use social skills first and magick as backup.
