Library (Mage: The Ascension 20th Anniversary)

Backgrounds

Definition

Library represents access to a collection of magical texts, grimoires, research notes, and occult reference materials. In M20, magical knowledge is recorded in countless forms: ancient grimoires, coded journals, encrypted digital files, oral traditions transcribed by apprentices, and Technocratic research papers liberated from laboratories. A Library gives a mage access to knowledge beyond their personal experience. Library is functionally critical for mages who want to research new rotes, understand unfamiliar magical phenomena, or learn about historical events in the Ascension War. Without Library access, a mage is limited to their own knowledge and what they can learn from mentors or fellow Tradition members. The depth and breadth of a Library directly affects how quickly a mage can expand their magical repertoire.

How it works

**Key Uses**: - Research new rotes and magical techniques - Look up information about supernatural phenomena - Study magical theory and history **Special Rules**: Library dots reduce the difficulty or time required for research rolls. Higher-rated Libraries contain rarer and more powerful knowledge. A Library can be physical (a room of books), digital (encrypted files), or even oral (recordings of traditional knowledge). Libraries can be shared with a cabal or Chantry.

Tips

**Build Advice**: Essential for research-focused mages and anyone who wants to learn new rotes between stories. A shared cabal Library can be more efficient than individual collections. **Tradition Synergies**: Order of Hermes prize vast Libraries of Hermetic lore. Sons of Ether maintain technical research archives. Virtual Adepts keep digital Libraries accessible from anywhere. Celestial Chorus preserve theological and mystical texts. **Character Concepts**: Hermetic scholar with an ancient grimoire collection, Etherite with boxes of research notes, Virtual Adept with terabytes of encrypted occult data, Verbena keeper of handwritten herbal and ritual texts.

Frequently asked questions

Can my Library contain knowledge from other Traditions?

Yes, though cross-Tradition knowledge is rarer and harder to interpret. A Hermetic Library might contain a Verbena herbal text, but using it effectively might require additional rolls or a broader magical understanding.

What happens if my Library is destroyed?

Losing a Library is devastating. The Background dots are lost until the collection can be rebuilt, which takes significant time and resources. Backing up a Library (digital copies, off-site storage) is wise for any mage who depends on their research materials.
