Wonder (Mage: The Ascension 20th Anniversary)
Definition
A Wonder is a permanently enchanted magical device, an artifact imbued with Sphere effects that can be activated without the user needing to cast the magick themselves. Wonders range from simple talismans that store Quintessence to powerful artifacts that replicate high-level Sphere effects. They are the magical equivalent of technology: tools that extend a mage's capabilities beyond their personal power. Wonders are prized possessions in the Awakened world. A well-crafted Wonder can provide effects the mage cannot yet achieve with their own Spheres, offer backup when personal magick fails, and function without generating Paradox (since the enchantment is already woven into the device). However, Wonders can be stolen, damaged, or drained, and relying too heavily on devices instead of personal growth is considered a trap by many Traditions.

Frequently asked questions
Do Wonders cause Paradox?
Generally, Wonders cause less Paradox than personal casting because the magical effect is already woven into the device. However, if the Wonder produces a clearly impossible effect witnessed by Sleepers, some Paradox may still accumulate. Coincidental Wonder effects are essentially Paradox-free.
Can I create my own Wonders?
Yes, with Prime 4 and the appropriate Sphere(s) for the desired effect. Creating a Wonder requires Quintessence, time, and a successful extended roll. The process is demanding but rewarding, as custom Wonders can be tailored to your exact needs.
