Willpower (Mage: The Ascension 20th Anniversary)

Derived

Definition

Willpower measures a mage's mental fortitude, determination, and inner strength. For Awakened characters, Willpower is the mortal foundation upon which magical will is built. Arete represents enlightened understanding; Willpower represents the sheer stubbornness to keep going when that understanding is tested. In the World of Darkness, Willpower is the last line of defense against despair, corruption, and mental domination. Willpower serves dual functions in M20: a permanent rating representing baseline determination, and a pool of spendable points that regenerate over time. Spending Willpower provides automatic successes, resists mental influence, and pushes through situations where talent alone falls short. For mages facing Paradox backlash, Nephandi corruption, and the existential weight of the Ascension War, Willpower is what keeps them functional.

How it works

**Key Uses**: - Spend a point to gain one automatic success on any roll - Resist Mind magick, supernatural compulsion, and fear - Push through pain, fatigue, and despair - Fuel certain Background abilities and resist Paradox effects **Special Rules**: Willpower has both a permanent rating (1-10) and a temporary pool that is spent and regenerated. Spending a Willpower point grants one automatic success. Willpower resists Mind effects and supernatural coercion. Permanent Willpower is rolled to resist certain Paradox effects and spiritual corruption. Temporary Willpower regenerates through rest, achieving goals, or fulfilling Nature.

Tips

**Build Advice**: High Willpower is universally valuable. It provides emergency automatic successes, resists mental influence, and keeps your mage functional under extreme stress. Starting with at least Willpower 5 is recommended for any mage. **Tradition Synergies**: Akashic Brotherhood cultivate iron Willpower through discipline. Celestial Chorus draw Willpower from faith. Euthanatos maintain resolve through their understanding of necessity. All Traditions benefit from high Willpower. **Character Concepts**: Unbreakable Akashic monk, Celestial Chorus mage whose faith sustains them, Euthanatos who perseveres through grim necessity, Hollow One whose defiance fuels their will, Hermetic scholar with academic determination.

Frequently asked questions

When should I spend Willpower?

Spend Willpower on critical rolls where failure has severe consequences, to resist supernatural mental influence, or to push through situations that would otherwise stop your mage cold. Conserve Willpower when possible, as running out leaves you vulnerable to Mind effects and unable to boost critical rolls.

How does Willpower regenerate?

Temporary Willpower regenerates through rest (one point per night of good sleep), achieving significant goals, acting in accordance with your Nature archetype, and at the Storyteller's discretion for particularly heroic or meaningful actions. Some Backgrounds and magical effects can also restore Willpower.

Does Willpower help resist Paradox?

In some cases. The Storyteller may call for a Willpower roll to resist certain Paradox effects, particularly Paradox-induced madness or spiritual corruption. However, Willpower does not prevent Paradox accumulation; it only helps manage the consequences of backlash.
