Manipulation (Werewolf: The Apocalypse 5th Edition)

Attributes

Definition

Manipulation measures a Garou's ability to influence others through cunning, misdirection, and social maneuvering. While Charisma inspires, Manipulation steers. It is the attribute of the schemer, the negotiator who always gets the better deal, and the trickster who turns enemies against each other without ever raising a claw. In Garou society, Manipulation has a complicated reputation. The Garou value directness and honor, and overt manipulation is frowned upon. Yet the Ragabash role exists precisely because the Garou Nation needs those willing to use cunning. Against human institutions like Pentex, manipulation is often more effective than raw force. Within pack politics, a subtle hand can resolve conflicts before they escalate to challenge rites.

How it works

**Dice Pool Uses**: - Manipulation + Persuasion: Subtle influence, steering conversations - Manipulation + Subterfuge: Lying, misdirection, hiding motives - Manipulation + Intimidation: Veiled threats, implied consequences - Manipulation + Politics: Political maneuvering within the sept **Special Rules**: Manipulation is contested by the target's Wits + Insight when deception is involved. In Crinos form, social rolls using Manipulation against humans are extremely difficult due to the Delirium effect.

Tips

**Build Advice**: Prioritize Manipulation for characters who prefer cunning over directness. It is the key social attribute for operating in human society and navigating sept politics without drawing unwanted attention. **Auspice Synergies**: Ragabash are the natural masters of Manipulation, using trickery and cunning to fulfill their role. Theurge may also use Manipulation when bargaining with tricky spirits. **Character Concepts**: Corporate infiltrator undermining Pentex, Ragabash trickster, political fixer within the sept, double agent among enemy Garou.

Frequently asked questions

Is Manipulation considered dishonorable for Garou?

It depends on context. Ragabash are expected to use cunning and trickery as part of their auspice role. Other auspices using Manipulation overtly may lose Honor Renown if caught being dishonest with packmates.

Does Manipulation work on spirits?

Some spirits can be manipulated, but many are perceptive enough to see through deception. Chiminage (offering fair trades) is generally more reliable for spirit dealings than manipulation.
