Wits (Hunter: The Reckoning 5th Edition)

Attributes

Definition

Wits represents quick thinking, perception, situational awareness, and the ability to react to sudden changes. For hunters, Wits is the Attribute that keeps you alive in the field -- noticing the shadow that moved wrong, reacting before the ambush closes, and making split-second decisions that determine whether the cell survives. The supernatural is fast. Vampires can move faster than the eye can follow. Ghosts appear without warning. Werewolves strike from ambush. Wits is a hunter's ability to process these threats quickly enough to respond. It's the difference between dodging and getting hit, between noticing the trap and walking into it. Wits also governs the ability to detect deception, read a room, and improvise when plans fall apart -- which happens constantly on the Hunt. No operation survives first contact with the supernatural intact, and Wits determines how quickly you adapt.

How it works

**Dice Pool Uses**: - Wits + Awareness: Detecting ambushes, noticing supernatural activity - Wits + Insight: Detecting lies, reading people quickly - Wits + Survival: Tracking creatures, finding shelter - Wits + Stealth: Finding hiding spots under pressure **Special Rules**: Wits is used for surprise rolls and determines initiative in many situations. High Wits hunters act first in combat, which is critical when fighting creatures that can kill in a single turn. Wits + Awareness is the standard roll to detect hidden supernatural creatures.

Tips

**Build Advice**: Wits is one of the most important Attributes for field hunters. It governs initiative, perception, and snap decisions. If your hunter regularly enters dangerous situations, invest heavily in Wits. **Creed Synergies**: Underground creed hunters need high Wits for situational awareness and detecting danger. Martial hunters use it for combat initiative and tactical assessment. **Character Concepts**: Street-smart survivor, emergency room nurse, detective, combat veteran whose instincts never switched off.

Frequently asked questions

How is Wits different from Intelligence?

Intelligence is deliberate reasoning and accumulated knowledge. Wits is speed of thought and instinctive reaction. You use Intelligence to research a vampire's history over days; you use Wits to notice the vampire standing behind you right now.
