Session Zero

Definition

A pre-campaign meeting where players and GM establish expectations, discuss themes and boundaries, create characters together, and align on the type of game everyone wants to play.

Example

Before starting our horror campaign, we had Session Zero: discussed comfort levels with gore and themes, established that PvP needs consent, and built characters who know each other.

Common Mistakes

  • Skipping it entirely ('we'll figure it out')
  • Not discussing tone and content boundaries
  • Creating characters in isolation who have no reason to work together
